Evidence has been found that even ancient man was selectively breeding dogs to accentuate desired aesthetic and functional traits in man’s best friends. The long history of breeding has led to dozens of different dogs suitable for different people, to the point where some modern dogs barely act or look like dogs any more.

From Pomskies to Labradoodles, today we have hundreds of breeds available to any budding dog owner, but sometimes it can be hard to know where to start looking when finding your ideal companion’s breed. To this end, I have collected the 8 most popular dog breeds that should help you start your search for your new furry friend.

  1. Dachshund

Commonly known as a Sausage Dog, the Dachshund is one of the most instantly recognizable breeds of dog out there. With their regular sized head and body and endearing stumpy legs, they are a testament to the insanity of human-dog interference (though not nearly as bad as the Bull Terrier’s transformation over the centuries).

Despite their appearance as an adorable freak of nature, they are extremely active and alert animals which will always try to keep you safe. Due to their history as badger hunters, they can tend to get a little too excited, but this is considered a bonus by many!

  1. Rottweiler

Due to their immensely muscular structure and intimidating bark, Rottweiler’s have gained a name through TV and Film as the quintessential guard dog. Much like sharks, however, the mass media has been very cruel to Rottweilers who are actually known as extremely caring and loyal dogs – to people they know.

They are intelligent dogs and will very rarely attack humans, preferring a good run and a play to a fight. They are a big commitment for any dog owner as they require a lot of exercise and attention, but if you have the time, you will be greatly rewarded by a very caring and sensible canine.

  1. Chihuahua

A happy Chihuahua dog leaps over short grass on a sunny day.

I am not personally a fan of this “ugly is cute” trend, but there is no way I can deny the popularity of such breeds in the modern age. Chihuahuas are known as the smallest dogs in the world, with an average height of around 7.5 inches, but this shouldn’t make you think they don’t make their presence known!

They are unbelievably hyperactive and require a lot of physical and mental attention to keep them happy, but their size makes up for this as a single stride for you is dozens for them. Due to their popularity as a first-timer’s dog, there are now dozens of available breeds like white chihuahuas and long-haired chihuahuas, meaning you can have your own personalized handbag dog!

  1. The Husky Family

The more popular Instagram and YouTube get, the more popular Huskies are going to become. With their striking coats and mesmerizing blue eyes, there’s no wonder they are considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing breeds out there. They are also some of the most loving and playful breeds out there, making them brilliant companions, especially for couples!

There is always a downside, however. Huskies are more closely related to wolves than the vast majority of other breeds, and as a result they are large dogs which require a huge amount of exercise every day, probably more than you need yourself! If this is no issue to you, finding the right husky breed for you could be the best idea you ever had.

  1. Bulldog

While looking like steroid-infused maniacs from the front, Bulldogs are well-known amongst dog lovers as one of the most affectionate breeds out there who love nothing more than falling asleep in their master’s lap. Another dog with a bad name, bulldogs are loud but won’t often attack anything larger than them, relying on intimidation to deal with threats. If you’re looking for an undeniably loving, low-maintenance dog, this is the breed for you!

  1. German Shepherd

One of the most well-known popular dogs, the German Shephard has been prized since the 1800’s as an extremely hard-working dog. They are fiercely loyal and extremely intelligent, making them one of the most popular choices for working dogs, with German Shepherds finding employment in airports, farms and even the emergency services!

  1. Poodle

In its purebred form, poodles are far from the world’s most popular dog, but due to one extremely key feature of the breed, the fact that they do not malt, they have become the mother of hundreds of cross-bred breeds to cater to those with allergies who still want their favorite breed. From cockapoos to havapoos, it’s tough to go on a dog walk and not see at least a couple dogs with poodle parents.

Unlike their televised appearances, poodles and their offshoots are extremely active, outdoorsy animals who can play all day and night without an issue. Many poodle breeds were primarily bred to conduct various outdoors tasks such as digging for grubs and protecting crops, but these days they are largely popular due to their adorable teddy bear aesthetic.

  1. Labrador Retriever

Labradors have remained the world’s favorite dog for decades and it is unlikely that this will change any time soon. They are more than intelligent enough to be trained to do anything you could expect of a large dog and they will be calm when you need them to be and insanely active when you want them to be.

As an owner you should be prepared for an energetic dog which requires a lot of love and exercise, but if you put the work in, you get one of the world’s most loving and friendly dogs who will happily interact with friends and strangers alike.
