Gus Mills
In the 1970's and 1980's Dr Mills spent 12 years in what is today known as the
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park engaged in research on the behavioral
ecology of the brown hyaena and the spotted hyaena. This work was
published in 1990 in a book titled "Kalahari Hyaenas." (reprinted by The
Blackburn Press). It highlights the differences in diet between these
two species; the brown hyaena being predominantly a scavenger of mammal
remains, the spotted hyaena a successful hunter of large prey, and
investigates how these differences affect the social behavior of the two
species. More recently Dr Mills developed a census technique for spotted
hyaenas in the Kruger National Park using playbacks of a variety of
hyaena sounds. Presently Dr Mills is currently engaged on a cheetah study in the
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
