On-going Hyaena Research Projects
An investigation of retaliatory poisoning and behavioral ecology of top carnivores, the African lion (Panthera leo) and the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) in human-dominated landscapes.
(Stephanie Dolreny, Laurence Frank & Adrian Trevis): In human-and-cattle-dominated landscapes of Maasailand in eastern Africa, African lions and spotted hyenas are in steep decline. These carnivores kill the livestock Maasai people depend on for food, money, and social status. Hyena attacks on livestock particularly ignite people’s hatred and result in retributive killings of threatened carnivores. This research project takes place in southern Kenya. The aims of the research are twofold: 1) to investigate the causes and impact of retaliatory poisoning on lions and hyenas, 2) to understand the behavioral ecology (in particular: the movements, diet, and vocalizations) of lions and hyenas, within human-dominated landscapes. Methods combine zoological and social science approaches: GPS collars and remotely triggered cameras in conjunction with participatory methods to design and execute carnivore conservation programs to promote coexistence between carnivores and local people.
